What is tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is a medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of obesity in November 2023.
How does tirzepatide work?
Tirzepatide is a double agonist. The molecular structure of tirzepatide allows it to act on GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors, allowing it to address obesity through two physiologic processes. It is thought that this is the reason it is more effective than semaglutide.

Tirzepatide acts on the pancreas to improve insulin secretion and suppress glucagon. It works on the stomach to delay gastric emptying. It also acts on the brain to suppress appetite and control cravings.

What else can tirzepatide do for my health?

What are the side effects of tirzepatide?
Side effects of tirzepatide are dose-related meaning the higher the dose, the increased likelihood and severity of side effects. These include mild-to-moderate nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation were the most common tirzepatide adverse effects.
Starting at a low dose and acclimating your body to the medication has been shown to alleviate many of these side effects.

Tirzepatide has been linked to medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in humans and is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Symptoms that may indicate a thyroid tumor include a mass in the neck, difficulty or painful swallowing, labored breathing, and persistent hoarseness.
Tirzepatide can cause an increase in heart rate which tends to go away after 24 weeks on the medication.

Tirzepatide behaves similar to semaglutide with regard to loss of muscle and fat tissue. Studies indicate that tirzepatide has a slightly more favorable ratio of lean mass loss to fat mass loss.
